In 2012, Alice made a decision that would transform lives. Spurred by an announcement in a church newsletter, she volunteered as a host for Nightstop, Depaul UK’s emergency accommodation programme. Since then, Alice’s commitment to providing safe spaces for young people experiencing homelessness has become a cornerstone of her life.
“I’ve always felt deeply aware of how privileged I am,” Alice reflects. “I’ve had opportunities that many don’t get—education, a stable upbringing—and I feel a responsibility to help those who haven’t had it as easy.”
For Alice, the decision to become a Nightstop host was born out of practicality and compassion. ‘Opening my spare room to someone in need was a small thing I could do that made a big difference.”
In recent years, Alice transitioned to providing Supported Lodgings, a longer-term option for young people who need time to rebuild their lives. She explains, “We made the switch when my husband, Daniel, and I had children. We wanted a setup that worked for our family while still helping young people in need.”
Alice is passionate about dispelling misconceptions surrounding homelessness and hosting. “People often worry about safety or disruption, but in my experience, the risks are minimal. Most of these young people are scared, not dangerous. They’re just trying to figure out their next step.”
Alice also sees hosting as an opportunity for her children to learn empathy and perspective. “I want my kids to understand that homelessness doesn’t fit one stereotype. It can happen to anyone, and we all have a role in helping.”
What motivates Alice to continue opening her home? “It’s so tangible,” she says. “If someone isn’t staying with us, they might be sleeping on a bus or in a train station. Hosting is a simple way to make sure they’re safe. It’s not just about giving; it’s about being part of their journey.”
Hosting has brought moments of joy and connection that stay with Alice. She recalls a guest who read her first-ever book during a stay. “The sense of achievement on her face was unforgettable. Moments like that remind me why I do this.”
As Alice and her family prepare for a move to Wales, she remains committed to supporting young people. “Even if we can only do short-term hosting right now, it’s still something. Every night makes a difference.”
Alice’s journey is a testament to Depaul UK’s core value: we believe in rights and responsibilities. By opening her home and heart, she has not only changed the lives of young people but also enriched her own.
