“I’ve gained so much from being able to help young people. Just having them around, talking about life, and knowing I’m making a difference—it’s fulfilling in a way that’s hard to describe.”
Providing Stability and Support: Joanne’s Story of Transforming Lives Through Supported Lodgings
Joanne has always been passionate about helping young people, but her experience as a Supported Lodgings host with Depaul UK has been a particularly rewarding chapter in her life. For Joanne, it’s about more than just offering a roof over someone’s head—it’s about providing direction, stability, and the tools young people need to rebuild their lives.
Currently, Joanne is hosting a young woman in her early twenties who arrived last autumn. When Susan first came to Joanne, she was struggling with depression following a death in her family. “When she first came, she wasn’t functioning that well,” Joanne explains. “Being in her room was her safe place, but it wasn’t practical to stay in bed 24/7. I knew it would affect her mental health even more, so I had to keep encouraging her.”
Over time, Joanne’s patience and guidance began to make a real difference. With Joanne’s support, the young woman started counselling, learned how to budget, and developed new cooking skills. “She never used to get up on time,” Joanne recalls. “But now, she gets up and is taking steps forward. I gave her a cash book to help her budget, and I’ve taught her how to cook proper meals from scratch.”
One of Joanne’s greatest joys has been teaching Susan how to cook. “She didn’t really know how to prepare a proper meal when she first arrived,” Joanne says. “I showed her how to peel onions, season chicken, and cook from scratch. Now, we often cook together, and one of our favourite meals is rice, chicken, and salad. It’s lovely to share that time in the kitchen and then enjoy the meal together—it’s become a regular part of our routine.”
Recently, Susan started a two-month hospitality course, which includes interview training and work experience. It’s a big milestone, and Joanne couldn’t be prouder. “She left quite early this morning for her first day. I’m so proud because she could have said, ‘I’m not ready yet,’ but instead, she decided to go for it. I think she took note of what I’ve been saying to her.”
Joanne believes that being a Supported Lodgings host is a tangible way to make a difference. “If you don’t direct young people to a certain path, they might take the wrong one because it feels easier. Being there to guide them toward the right path is what makes this so important for me,” she says.
She also addresses some of the misconceptions that potential hosts might have. “The young people are fully assessed before they come to you,” she explains. “Depaul UK ensures they’re a good fit and supports you every step of the way. There’s always someone to call if you need help, so there’s no need to worry.”
Joanne’s experience has been deeply fulfilling, and she encourages others to give Supported Lodgings a try. “If you’re unsure, start small,” she advises. “Do short-term placements first, like I did. You’ll see how manageable it is and realise just how much of an impact you can make.”
Through Supported Lodgings, Joanne has not only changed the lives of young people but has also gained something invaluable herself. “It’s fulfilling to have a young person around and to know you’re making a difference,” she says. “We talk about life, share meals, and learn from each other. It’s not just about helping them; it’s a rewarding experience for me, too.”
Joanne’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make in the life of a young person experiencing homelessness. If you have a spare room and a willingness to help, Supported Lodgings could be an opportunity to transform not just their life, but yours too.
