What does mentoring involve?

Volunteer mentors are positive role models who support their mentee to work towards set goals. These goals will support future independence, and might involve practical tasks such as learning to cook or budget. Other mentors will offer career advice, help to build social networks or support educational goals.

Each of the young people we work with is unique and individual – so mentors are paired carefully with their mentees, and each pairing will work differently.

Practicalities

We ask our volunteer mentors to commit to a minimum of six months in the role, and to meet weekly for sessions of up to three hours.

This allows mentors and mentees to build trust and achieve long-term goals allowing mentees to move on from Depaul UK services and live independently.

Support and training

All of our volunteers receive training and support to carry out their role. Volunteers are also supported by their local Volunteer Mentor Coordinator, and can meet other volunteers at regular forums and social events.
